Last Saturday evening, a routine gathering at the Elks Lodge in Apache Junction was violently interrupted when a vehicle crashed into the building, injuring 30 people. According to the official report, the incident occurred at approximately 8:27 p.m. and resulted in ten individuals being transported to various local hospitals while fifteen others were treated on the spot for more minor injuries. Additionally, at least five people sought medical attention on their own volition for lesser injuries, with one currently in critical but stable condition.
The driver, identified as 73-year-old Thomas Edward Kain, was reported to have been at the Elks Lodge prior to the accident. After getting into his truck to leave, he inadvertently drove into the building. Kain is now in custody, and it is confirmed that alcohol was a contributing factor in this calamity. The Apache Junction Police have conducted interviews with those involved and are collaborating closely with the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control to thoroughly investigate the cause of this unfortunate event. Authorities urge the community to solely never underestimate the dangers of drinking and driving.
Local officials and emergency responders expressed their relief that there were no fatalities as a result of the crash. "This accident shows just how dangerous it can be to drink and drive," the official statement emphasized, shedding light on the impaired reaction time and diminished decision-making skills that accompany alcohol consumption. The report concludes with a plea to the public, advising individuals to have a safe ride arranged if they’ve been drinking and to similarly encourage friends and family to do the same.
