The Miami community is dealing with a deadly hit-and-run crash that happened yesterday morning, leaving one man dead and a woman injured. According to Local 10, the crash took place near Southwest 42nd Avenue and Southwest Eighth Street in Miami's Little Gables area, where a man driving a Hyundai Sonata ran a red light and collided with other vehicles including a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, after which the driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was transported to Coral Gables Hospital in stable condition.
The driver of the Tahoe implicated in the incident has been identified as 50-year-old Gilbert Alexander Caro, a Venezuelan politician and former political prisoner, Caro was arrested Tuesday after fleeing the scene on foot and failing to render aid or contact authorities, as detailed in the arrest report, as per information from NBC Miami. The Venezuelan political party Voluntad Popular addressed the incident on social media, stating they are "waiting for more information about the case" and emphasized the due process anticipated in the United States regarding the legal dealings of the matter.
Police investigators found a paper bag from a local sushi restaurant inside Caro’s SUV, and phone records showed an order from Moshi Moshi was placed around the time of the crash, which may link him to the site at the time of the catastrophe. Meanwhile, nearby residents like Dr. Carlos Coro, whose comment was "My goodness, the family — can you imagine their family?" as he shared his sympathies for the family of the deceased, told Local 10 about the hazardous nature of the accident site.
The aftermath of the crash was evident with severe vehicular damage, a demolished pole, and a shattered street sign scattered in the vicinity. Caro, after contacting the registered owner of the Tahoe to inform them of his involvement and advising them to call 911, was arrested later, as he now faces the grim reality of his actions with charges of leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in death, being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with his bond pending determination.
