Verizon customers throughout the country found themselves struggling to maintain a signal Monday morning as widespread outages forced many mobile phones into SOS mode. SOS mode, typically used for emergency calls when a cellular network isn’t available, became a nationwide issue with reports flooding in from areas including Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. NBC News acquired a statement from Verizon acknowledging the problem, with a company spokesperson saying, "We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers." Verizon assured customers that engineers were engaged and they were working quickly to identify and solve the issue.

The outage came to light significantly after users started reporting connectivity issues early in the morning. DownDetector, a service tracking website and telecommunications outages, started to receive a sudden increase in outage reports around 9 a.m. ET, as indicated by comments on the site. These issues seemed to rapidly escalate, with over 100,000 outages logged shortly before 10:30 a.m. ET. Verizon attempted to manage a surge in customer frustrations through social media engagement, asking for more specific information to help resolve the service failures promptly.

The precise origins of the outage remained unclear. However, the impact was felt by users unable to send or receive text messages, make calls, or even employ 2-factor authentication, which is often essential for accessing secure accounts. According to a report by CBS MoneyWatch, one Verizon customer expressed these difficulties succinctly: "Also how can I log into my verizon account if I can't verify who I am by getting a text because of an outage?" This highlighted the compounding issues that can arise from a network disruption.

While engineers worked to quickly restore service, many customers took to DownDetector to share their experiences, with one stating, "SOS in Ohio since mid-morning. Was working on my drive into work, but went down several hours ago and hasn't come back," signifying a wide-reaching and sustained effect. Verizon was quick to ensure customers their emergency call capabilities remained intact, citing the SOS feature’s ability to make emergency calls by connecting to other carriers when necessary. Verizon has not yet stated a specific timeline for when full service will be restored, leaving some to wonder as to when their connectivity will return to normalcy.
