In a recent incident at Waltham High School, a student was arrested after a replica handgun was discovered in their vehicle on the school's campus. According to NBC Boston, the BB gun, made to resemble a real Glock firearm, initiated an investigation following a report received last week of a firearm potentially sighted in a car on school grounds.
Marisa Mendonsa, the Superintendent of Waltham Public Schools, confirmed in a letter that the suspicion arose from a community member's report. Following the discovery on Thursday, the school initiated a "hold-in-place" protocol during the police response to ensure the safety of the students and staff. Despite the situation, authorities believe this to be an isolated incident, without a broader threat to the school community, WHDH reported.
The police were able to locate and inspect the vehicle, quickly confirming the presence of the nonlethal replica weapon. The unnamed 17-year-old student was subsequently removed from school and taken into custody, their identity remaining confidential due to legal protections for minors. Although no injuries resulted from the incident, it comes in the aftermath of a fatal high school shooting in Winder, Georgia, which has cast a shadow over school security nationwide.
In light of the arrest, Waltham High School has taken measures to bolster its safety protocols and provide support to the student body. Mendonsa expressed gratitude to the individual who reported their concern and underscored the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious activities. Additional police officers were on campus during class dismissal, and counseling services are being offered to anyone needing assistance. "I am deeply grateful to the community member who reached out to the Waltham Police Department to report this concern. Please remind your children of the importance of reporting any unusual or suspicious activity to a trusted adult or school authority immediately," Mendonsa stated, emphasizing the role of community cooperation in maintaining a secure environment.
