On Tuesday, a high-tension incident unfolded in the City of Maricopa where a 31-year-old man, Stephen Meriwether, was arrested after a standoff that lasted for several hours. Meriwether, who was wanted on pending warrants, initiated the standoff by fleeing a routine pull-over and barricading himself in a residential home.
According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the pursuit began near John Wayne Parkway and Honeycutt Avenue before escalating to Meriwether taking refuge in an attic and subsequently an upstairs bedroom of a house. Law enforcement agencies worked to negotiate with Meriwether, employing the aid of the Pinal County Regional SWAT Team and Chandler Police to manage the tense situation.
After a standoff and negotiations that spanned over two hours, officers resorted to using chemical agents to coax the suspect out of his hideout. 12 News reports that the confrontation came to a close around 6:30 p.m., with Meriwether surrendering to the authorities. No shots were fired during the arrest.
The actions taken by the SWAT team ultimately brought the situation to its resolve without any further escalation. Meriwether is currently facing charges of unlawful flight in addition to the warrants that were initially outstanding.
