SALT LAKE CITY—Salt Lake County saw a tumultuous weekend stretching the resources of Utah Highway Patrol officers with high-speed pursuits and a separate incident that might link to a violent shooting earlier in the week. In one event, law enforcement engaged in a chase with two motorcyclists allegedly engaging in a "speeding contest" on State Street, near 3600 South. According to documents from the Utah Highway Patrol, both bikers were clocked speeding nearly 40 mph over the posted 40 mph limit. The arrest affidavit, obtained by ABC4, noted that the helicopter support was called in to assist the ground units in following the two motorcyclists.
Simultaneously facing the chaos of the road, a separate driver suffered no injuries after crashing through a fence at Yuba Dam Road. The driver, an 18-year-old male, claimed to Utah Highway Patrol officers that he reached speeds of 148 mph because a Toyota had been menacingly chasing him. However, as reported by KSL Newsradio, authorities could not verify the presence of such a vehicle. The young man was taken into custody on suspicion of speeding and reckless endangerment.
Just before these high-speed incidents, Salt Lake City Police were already investigating a more grave affair. A shooting occurred near 320 S. State Street following a reported fight at the On Top Lounge involving individuals purported to be gang members. The gunfire resulted in a woman who later got treated and released from the hospital, and a man with nine gunshot wounds, left in a critical but stable condition. This man's identity is withheld due to his involvement in unrelated, out-of-state felony charges, according to the Salt Lake police, as per KSL. Authorities are still piecing together whether the earlier dispute holds any connection to the shooting.
