Bay Area drivers should be advised about the impact of the closure of the Interstate 10 corridor in Arizona this weekend. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is going to shut down westbound I-10 between Loop 202 (Santan/South Mountain Freeway) and US 60 from Friday, September 20 at 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. on Monday, September 23. This closure is required for paving and a traffic shift part of the ongoing I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

According to ADOT's announcement, various on-ramps to westbound I-10 will also be temporarily closed, including those at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard/Sundust Road and multiple streets ranging from Chandler Boulevard to Baseline Road. Those looking to travel westbound on I-10 can use a detour that involves taking eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway), then northbound on Loop 101 (Price Freeway), and finally westbound on Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to rejoin I-10 beyond the closure point.

Additionally, southbound State Route 143 (SR 143) is scheduled for a weekend closure between Loop 202 and I-10 for a traffic shift. Travelers will be unable to use the ramps from Loop 202 to southbound SR 143, as well as the eastbound I-10 ramp to northbound SR 143, from 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 20, until 4:00 a.m. Monday, September 23. Detours for this closure will direct drivers to use alternative routes such as westbound Loop 202 to eastbound I-10 or eastbound Loop 202 to southbound Loop 101 to westbound US 60.

To access Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, both closures suggest using southbound 44th Street from Loop 202. Come September 23, Northbound 48th Street will reopen between Broadway Road and I-10, but southbound 48th Street will stay closed into October, urging drivers to use I-10 to 40th Street and then Broadway Road to reach southbound 48th Street. ADOT urges drivers to use the designated detours during these closures and to stay informed about potential scheduling changes due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. For the latest updates, travelers can download TheCurve mobile app or visit the project website's Alerts section.

The closures and the broader I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project are part of a regional plan to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance airport access, and accommodate projected growth in the area. The project was included in the Maricopa Association of Governments' Regional Transportation Plan and is funded through a sales tax initiative approved by voters under Proposition 400 in 2004.
