Motorists in Arizona are advised to expect delays and adjust their travel plans this weekend as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced that westbound Interstate 10 will be closed between Loop 202 (Santan/South Mountain Freeway) and US 60. According to ADOT, the closure will begin at 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 and will last until 4 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, due to a traffic shift and paving work as part of the ongoing I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

The weekend work will also involve lane reductions on westbound I-10, where it will be narrowed to two lanes between US 60 and SR 143. Additionally, several on-ramps to westbound I-10 and westbound US 60 will be shut down starting at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, extending, through to the end of the closure period. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes, with ADOT recommending the use of eastbound Loop 202, northbound Loop 101, and westbound Loop 202 to bypass the closure and access westbound I-10 beyond it.

For those travelling to the West Valley, the advised detour is to take Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) west and then north to meet up with I-10 at 59th Avenue. Passengers aiming for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport should use northbound Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 and utilize the Sky Harbor Boulevard entrance. ADOT has stressed the importance of using designated detours to avoid potential delays and disruptions caused by the closure.

Once the weekend work is complete and westbound I-10 reopens, motorists will find a new access point to enter the westbound Collector Distributor (CD) Roads just north of Baseline Road. However, it's important to note, that this new entrance will not provide access to eastbound US 60 but will connect to SR 143, Broadway Road, and 40th Street. Drivers looking for the most current traffic information and updates on the project are encouraged to download TheCurve app or visit the project website's Alerts section for real-time updates.

The I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project is a key initiative identified by the Maricopa Association of Governments in their Regional Transportation Plan, supported by the half-cent sales tax passed by Maricopa County voters under Proposition 400 in 2004. The project aims to alleviate congestion, improve airport connectivity, encourage ridesharing and transit usage, and accommodate the region's projected growth. For a comprehensive understanding of these major improvements, motorists and interested parties can learn more from the dedicated project website.
