After an unexpected twist of fate on the eve of Labor Day when a fire sparked, Yamas Greek Kitchen + Bar, a cherished West Austin dining locale, was forced to halt operations. As reported by CBS Austin, the incident, which originated from an outdoor electrical fault, occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Friday, August 30. Despite the unforeseen closure during a peak holiday weekend, the establishment shared through social media that no injuries were sustained and their building remained unscathed.
According to a statement obtained by KVUE, owners Hristos and Roxie Nikolakos faced the daunting task of notifying nearly 2,000 patrons of the cancellation this Labor Day weekend, however the swift response of an employee who doused the initial flames, and the subsequent intervention of firefighters, prevented what could have been a more calamitous event. Amidst the chaos, an electrician's revelation regarding the lack of a crucial $10 component needed for repairs—compounded by the holiday closure of supply stores—further prolonged their plight, Hristos and Roxie Nikolakos's resilience shone, funneling gratitude towards the outpouring of support from the community that has been a constant since their eatery's inception last summer.
The fire, which necessitated cutting open part of the restaurant's roof to be extinguished, also prompted the disposal of $25,000 worth of food due to lack of refrigeration, Hristos Nikolakos recounted. The stalwart spirit of the staff and local friends who aided in the repair efforts during the holiday weekend stood testament to the interconnectedness and camaraderie pulsing through the veins of this dining establishment.
Known for its unique blend of contemporary and traditional Greek gastronomy, Yamas Greek Kitchen + Bar aims to make a swift recovery and welcome patrons back to their tables. They have announced intentions to reopen on Tuesday, pending resolution of lingering technical issues, with hopes that the community will resume their patronage, contributing to the resurgence of the restaurant's dream that materialized just over a year ago, in June 2023, as Hristos Nikolakos put it, "Come back as customers," he told KVUE, expressing that such continued support represents the sole aspiration they harbor amidst recovery efforts.
