The iconic Wicker Park cocktail bar Machine has shuttered its doors permanently as of July, following a struggle to keep the business afloat amidst changing neighborhood dynamics and economic pressures. According to Eater Chicago, landlords have filed an eviction lawsuit against the owners, who allegedly owe upwards of $30,000 in unpaid rent. The decision to close down appears tied to these financial challenges, despite the owners’ interest in reestablishing the Machine in a new location.

In a statement obtained by Eater Chicago, Chireal Jordan and Brian Galati's spokesperson confirmed the July closure and the failure to renegotiate the lease, while listings hinted at only a temporary shutdown. Serving once as a unique cocktail provider with their signature burgers and floral arrangements, Machine's concept will be missed by those who frequent the vibrant Division Street.

Division Street has long been a hub for nightlife and gastronomy in Chicago. The area is going through another transformation, much like the one that saw hipster-oriented art and music bars of the '90s replaced by sports bars in the 2000s. Restaurants along this strip, according to Eater Chicago, have felt the squeeze from rising operational costs and shifting consumer patterns—shown by recent closures such as the Fifty/50 Sports Bar, now shuttering after 15 years of service.

Amid its last hurrah, The Fifty/50 orchestrated a festive farewell, offering discounts and inviting past patrons to share memories online. Alongside serving what they claimed to be Chicago's best wings, The Fifty/50 was recognized for blending high-quality bar food with upscale ambiance. Before Delving into the kickoff celebration for the Bears' first home game of the season, The Fifty/50 plans to offer 50% off wings and host guest bartending events featuring the bar’s co-owners and original staff members.

Reflecting on their journey, the co-founders Greg Mohr and Scott Weiner candidly shared, "Throughout the last week, Weiner and Mohr will be onsite to bartend and welcome back longtime employees to also jump behind the bar and pour one last shot," according to WGN TV. The Fifty/50's legacy as a beloved community sports bar, woven into the lives of Chicagoans, local first responders, and sports enthusiasts, will stand as a testament to its 15-year history in Wicker Park.
