A 17-year-old girl was found fatally shot in a Humboldt Park home, authorities and a neighbor said. Stephani Lopez-Ramirez was discovered around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday in an apartment in the 700 block of North Avers Avenue, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

According to the Cook County medical examiner's office, Lopez-Ramirez resided on the 3300 block of West Potomac Avenue in Humboldt Park and suffered a gunshot wound to her arm, which led to her death at 1:01 p.m. The subsequent autopsy, as stated by the Chicago Tribune revealed that the cause was a single gunshot that traveled through her arm into the chest, ruling her death a homicide. A person of interest is currently in police custody, but, no criminal charges had been announced as of Wednesday afternoon.

Neighbor Jackie Smith Jr., who has lived on the block since the late '70s, expressed his shock to the Chicago Sun-Times, stating that back in the day the block "made the news many days," but recently it's been "beautiful, it's peaceful." He revealed that neighbors had informed him of the incident, but details were scant on exactly what had transpired.

Investigation of the homicide remains underway by Area 4 detectives. The block showed no signs of the previous day's tragedy; there was a conspicuous absence of activity, and the visuals did not betray the violence that claimed Lopez-Ramirez's life.
