A late-night pursuit in Kent ended in SeaTac with the apprehension of a 19-year-old man, following a police chase of a stolen U-Haul truck. FOX 13 Seattle reports that the chase began after 10:30 p.m. on West Meeker Street when officers tried to stop the vehicle. The suspect, however, did not comply and attempted to flee from law enforcement.
According to KING 5, spike strips were deployed on the west hill of Kent to stop the truck. Despite their use, the driver continued to a SeaTac apartment complex, eventually crashing into a tree and a retaining wall. It was after the truck had come to a halt that officers discharged their weapons; however, there has been no confirmation of what specifically prompted shots to be fired.
The suspect's identity has not been released, but authorities confirmed that the 19-year-old Seattle man was arrested and booked on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and eluding police. As the suspect was being taken into custody, no officers or bystanders were reported to have sustained injuries during the incident.
As is routine in such cases, the two officers who fired their weapons are now on administrative leave. "The Valley Independent Investigation Team was called in to conduct an independent investigation," according to details provided by KING 5. Police believe no additional suspects are involved since the U-Haul was only occupied by the driver at the time of the pursuit and capture per MyNorthwest report.
The investigation will continue to determine if additional charges are necessary, as the aftermath of such a chase leaves questions that demand answers. The community awaits the results of the independent investigation for clarity on an event that unfolded with the speed and finality of a concrete truth: the laws of motion apply until they don't, and someone pulls the parking brake on a night hurtling out of control.
