San Francisco's transportation future just got a boost, courtesy of a federal grant to better connect the city. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi revealed this week that San Francisco will receive nearly $25 million for the Downtown Rail Extension project. This transit upgrade is designed to bring California High-Speed Rail and Caltrain commuter services directly into the heart of the city at the Salesforce Transit Center, nicknamed The Portal, according to an announcement featured on Bay Area Metro's blog.

The grant, amounting to $24.6 million, will allow the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) to complete the design phase for the rail lines that will extend to the transit center, facilitating job creation and offering a more convenient and cost-effective public transport option for San Franciscans, Pelosi noted in a statement obtained by Bay Area Metro.

With over $360 million already funneled into the Salesforce Transit Center project by MTC, the new federal investment positions the city closer to economic and climate recovery through improved infrastructure. "Safe, affordable and accessible public transit is key to San Francisco’s economic recovery and to saving the planet from the climate crisis," Pelosi said. "This new federal investment, made possible by Democrats’ historic Infrastructure Law, will help further unite the Bay by completing the final design for the Downtown Rail Extension," according to the Bay Area Metro's blog. Her statements emphasize the Biden-Harris administration's commitment to an equitable infrastructure overhaul.

The competitive national selection process for the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program, led by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, named the Bay Area as a recipient of this critical funding, which will extend Caltrain from Fourth and King Streets to the Salesforce Transit Center that already boasts integration with 11 transit systems. The project, a grand vision over 30 years in the making by the TJPA, involves 1.3 miles of rail extension constructed mostly underground, with an array of features including an underground station at Fourth and Townsend streets and six structures along its alignment for emergency exit and ventilation.

Once complete, The Portal promises lower concourse areas with ticketing and waiting zones for rail passengers, complemented by retail spaces. At the same time, the train platform level will host six tracks and three platforms that cater to the Caltrain and high-speed rail services. Adam Van de Water, Executive Director of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, praised Pelosi's role, "The Transbay Joint Powers Authority cannot understate the critical role the Speaker Emerita has played in ensuring the creation of a seamless network of transportation options and we are thrilled to be selected to receive a CRISI award to further San Francisco’s rail connection to Caltrain and California High-Speed Rail through the Portal," as detailed in Bay Area Metro's blog post.
