An 8-year-old boy is in fair condition after being shot in the chest inside a South Side Chicago home, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The incident took place in the Ashburn neighborhood, around 5:50 p.m. on Thursday. Chicago police officers arrived at the residence on the 3800 block of West 87th Street, where they discovered the injured child.

In an interview with ABC7 Chicago, neighborhood resident Karla Santiago expressed concern, saying, "We don't know if it was on purpose or if it was an accident. Like, it really concerns me because, again like, I have a little brother. We don't know where that bullet could've ended up in." Santiago also mentioned witnessing someone being detained at the scene.

The young victim was swiftly transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He was listed in fair condition, a status affirmed by the police. A firearm was retrieved at the location of the shooting which, as per officials, involved a perpetrator known to the boy.

Though a person of interest was taken into custody following the incident, they have been released without charges. The investigation is still active, being pursued by Area One detectives.
