An 85-year-old El Paso man, identified as Richard Carlton Wilson, who was reportedly driving drunk and at a high speed, has died following a car crash that occurred on Transmountain Road in August. According to El Paso Times, the El Paso Police Department stated that Wilson was operating a 2021 Nissan Sentra on Aug. 17 around 9:15 p.m. when he collided with the back of a Dodge Durango that was stopped at a red light at Woodrow Bean Transmountain and Rushing roads.
Wilson's vehicle was traveling westbound on Woodrow Bean when it smashed into the Dodge, which resulted in him sustaining life-threatening injuries and led to his transportation to University Medical Center, as detailed by KFOX-TV. After initially being in stable condition, Wilson succumbed to his injuries on September 27, the driver of the Dodge, a 36-year-old man, as well as a 29-year-old woman and children in the vehicle, were reported to have suffered minor to no harm.
According to the authorities, alcohol and Wilson's failure to control his speed were significant factors leading to the tragic event, which is now the 48th traffic fatality in the area this year, a slight decrease from the 55 fatalities documented at the same time last year, as noted by KTSM. While the city witnessed a small dip in traffic fatalities, this incident serves as a grim reminder of the potentially dire consequences of driving under the influence and excessive speed.
Police investigations continue as the community reflects on the events leading to Wilson's death, with public discussions likely to address ongoing concerns related to drunk driving, traffic safety, and the need for more effective measures ensuring the wellbeing of El Paso's residents on its roads, no new policy changes or measures have been announced by the local authorities as of now in response to this incident or the general trends in traffic-related fatalities.
