Anne Arundel County and the Chase Your Dreams Initiative are gearing up to proudly present a new mural at Bacontown Park this coming Saturday. The mural stretches over the park's basketball courts. It honors the enduring spirit of Maria Bacon, who deeded the land it stands after gaining her freedom from slavery in 1860. In the words of County Executive Steuart Pittman, "Once again, superstar local artist Comacell Brown and Chase Your Dreams Initiative are breathing good energy into the parts of our county where we need it most," as detailed by Anne Arundel County.
Dubbed the "Neighborhood Rebound Project," the initiative operates under the belief that sports can foster social connections and encourage active lifestyles. Spearheaded by Kyle Williams, CEO of Tunnel Vision and President & Co-Founder of the Chase Your Dreams Initiative, the project has managed to revitalize the space and strengthen community bonds. "It’s with great honor to complete this project for the community of Bacontown in dedication to the late great historic African American pioneer, Maria Bacon,” Kyle Williams said, per the county's press release. Williams emphasized a desire to continuously partner with Recreation & Parks on similar projects that impact social and economic issues.
Muralist Comacell Brown, known for his vibrant renditions of local heritage, was among the artists who contributed to the mural's creation. The project also received support from DTLR, Arundel Community Development Services, the Laurel Race Course Impact Fund, and County Councilwoman Julie Hummer. Together, their efforts signify a collaborative push to use public spaces as a medium to unify and empower the community.
The mural unveiling will take place at 11 AM. The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, community games, and the opportunity to engage with the artists and partners involved in the project.
