A 16-year-old student was arrested and is facing charges after allegedly bringing a stolen, loaded gun to Eastpointe High School in Michigan. Eastpointe police officers responded to the school at about 8 a.m. following a weapons complaint. According to the police, security officers noticed a bulge in the student's waistband that prompted a check with a metal detecting wand, but the student refused to cooperate. A physical altercation occurred when a security guard attempted to disarm the student, who had entered the school at the same time, as reported by The Detroit News.
The student, struggling with a security guard, was eventually disarmed and taken into custody. The gun was confirmed to be stolen, as emphasized in a statement shared by FOX 2 Detroit. Amid these events, the high school implemented a brief lockdown, lasting approximately 30 minutes, before classes continued as normal.
In light of this incident, Eastpointe High School Principal Todd Yarch expressed gratitude towards the school's security team. He stated to FOX 2 Detroit, "I feel blessed that I have such a great team that they reacted so quickly and handled it in a manner that was a very minor disruption to our school." And in the words of resident Judy Trupiano, reflecting community concerns, "It’s pretty scary, I think, for the kids, for the parents – the whole neighborhood."
Moreover, safety protocols newly established at the school played a crucial role in this incident. Principal Yarch elaborated on the measures, which include separate entrance and bag checks, admitting that the suggestions came directly from both students and staff to improve security, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. Residents applaud the administration, feeling supportive of the steps taken to ensure their children's safety.
The situation is under review by the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office as they decide on the charges the student will face. The student is currently held at the Macomb Juvenile Justice Center. Meanwhile, the Eastpointe Police Department has praised the actions of the security guard, stating that his "vigilance and willingness to act to disarm the suspect" could have potentially averted a tragic situation, further highlighted in a press release cited by WWJ Newsradio.
