The scope of a baby powder recall by Dynarex Corporation has widened to include nearly 42,000 bottles across 35 states, citing potential asbestos contamination, which is linked to cancer. As per the company's announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website and additional reporting by New York Post, the initial alert, involving approximately 1,500 bottles, has been significantly extended after routine FDA sampling detected the harmful substance in some of the baby powder products; the recall now encompasses items sold within New York, New Jersey, Florida, and through Amazon from on or after January 18.
While no illnesses have been reported, the company is urging customers to check their baby powder bottles for batch numbers B 048 to B 060. For more information, they can contact Dynarex at their recall hotline, 1-888-396-2739, or via email at [email protected], as reported by Local 10.
It's important to note that Johnson & Johnson, a major baby powder manufacturer, faced similar asbestos concerns, leading to the voluntary discontinuation of their talc-based products in North America and a pending $700 million settlement for misleading customers.
The FDA strongly advises customers who have purchased the recalled baby powder to stop using it immediately and seek a full refund. Asbestos exposure is known to increase the risk of cancer, mesothelioma, and severe lung diseases. Recent research has also suggested a possible link between talcum powder use in the genital area and ovarian cancer.
Due to the seriousness of the situation and the history of contamination issues, Dynarex has stopped distribution while investigating the cause of the contamination and preventing future incidents.
