As we crest the midway point of Citizens Academy 2024 in Blaine, the community's involvement in the minutiae of public safety sees no slowdown. This free, eight-week program, which kicked off earlier this year, invites locals to step into the shoes of their civil servants. With the first five weeks under their belts, participants are singing its praises.
The experience has already included a dive into police work, with week 3 turning citizens into officers of the law. "Participants learned about traffic enforcement and impaired driving," reports the official Blaine Police Department Facebook page. Citizens donned goggles that simulated inebriation, then tried their hand at field sobriety testing—a sobering demonstration of alcohol's effects. They even conducted mock traffic stops, stepping firmly into the shoes that they are so accustomed to seeing from a distance.
Fire prevention took the spotlight in week 4, back at SBM Fire Station #3. Participants gained insights into sprinklers, fire prevention, and the intricate process of fire investigations. They even witnessed a sprinkler trailer demo and handled fire extinguishers firsthand. The importance of these systems can't be overstated, as they are the silent guardians against the eager devouring flames that would ravage our homes and memories without such defiance.
Week 5 ignited the passions of the attendees with a full-throttle firefighting experience. Fitted in fire gear, participants were shuffled through a series of stations. They climbed the Tower 3 ladder, took a bucket ride, drove a fire truck, negotiated a search and rescue in pitch-black conditions, and extinguished a car ablaze. The remaining four weeks promise to continue the adrenaline rush with yet more immersive activities.
