Nikki DiMascola and her family are facing deep sorrow after the sudden loss of their mother at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, made even harder by the absence of her belongings. According to a CBS Boston report, Ruth DiMascola's valuables, including a purse, jewelry, and phone, have been missing since her demise on August 1 due to a ruptured brain aneurysm.
"It was horrifying. It was my worst nightmare," told CBS Boston report, Nikki DiMascola. The family was devastated when they flew in to be with their mother on life support, facing the reality of her situation. Their struggle continued as they searched for Ruth's belongings, which ambulance staff had noted were with her when she arrived at the hospital.
Nikki's persistent efforts to retrieve her mother's belongings included numerous calls to hospital lines and an in-person appeal at the emergency department, as Boston 25 News details. Despite these efforts, and even after sending a combined total of 46 letters to the hospital president and board of trustees, the family's pleas went unanswered.
Institutional responses tend toward the processual, and in this case, a spokesperson from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center indicated an exhaustive search was performed, albeit without success. "Our patients and their families are our top priority, and when issues like this are brought to our attention, we thoroughly investigate, In this instance, we performed an exhaustive search and were unfortunately unable to locate the patient's belongings. We communicated several times with the family about the situation and offered our condolences for the loss of their loved one and her belongings," the hospital spokesperson said, promising a review of the current practices dealing with the handling of lost belongings, according to CBS Boston.
However, apologies and system reviews offer little solace to the grieving DiMascolas. "It's the worst day of somebody's life. And to have people treat everything like business instead of like a human is just... it's terrible," Nikki DiMascola shared her disappointment with CBS Boston, expressing a desire for more empathy from the hospital staff. As of now, the family continues to seek closure not only for their loss but also for the belongings that unexpectedly vanished in the care of the medical institution they trusted.
