A sixth-grade student from Brockton, Massachusetts, died after experiencing a medical emergency while playing basketball at Dana Barros Basketball Club in Stoughton. The student, identified as George-Levi Njuguna, collapsed during a game on Tuesday evening, prompting swift action from on-site individuals and emergency personnel, as reported by WHDH.
According to Boston.com, Njuguna was playing basketball when he became unresponsive, this led to multiple 911 calls at around 8 p.m. with dispatchers providing CPR instructions until Stoughton police and fire departments arrived to assist. Despite the efforts of emergency crews and the use of a defibrillator, the Brockton Public Schools spokesman Jordan Mayblum confirmed that the child was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, his death described by Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara as "a horrific tragedy."
Dana Barros Basketball Club President Stephanie Creutz shared condolences, acknowledging the impact of the loss on the club's community, "Our entire basketball community, especially his teammates and coaches but all of our club members and their families are devastated and heartbroken over this tragedy," said Creutz in a statement obtained by WCVB. Brockton Public Schools are reportedly making resources available for those grieving.
Details surrounding Njuguna's death are under investigation; however, Stoughton police have indicated the event does not appear to be suspicious in nature, describing it as an unattended death "per standard procedure," as noted by Boston.com. The basketball facility canceled activities the following day as a mark of respect and to provide grief counseling services to those affected by the sudden loss.
