In a ceremony held last Thursday night, the Buckeye Police Department's School Resource Officer (SRO), Michael Miklus, was formally recognized by the Agua Fria High School District for his significant contributions to campus security and student mentorship. SRO Miklus, attached to Canyon View High School, was inducted into the district's Hall of Fame, heralding his work which encompasses public safety education and fostering safe driving habits among students.
Having begun his assignment at Canyon View High School in 2022, SRO Miklus has to routinely coordinate with school security teams, ensuring a safe environment for students and staff. His resume extends to aiding with inquiries at neighboring schools such as Verrado High School and to swiftly respond to emergency situations nearby. According to a Buckeye Police Department announcement, these responsibilities are in line with his overarching role to maintain safety protocols across educational institutions.
One initiative by SRO Miklus involves mock crash demonstrations at Canyon View High School and Verrado High School. These demonstrations aim to highlight the importance of safe driving, especially during events like prom, stressing the dangers of drinking and driving and the importance of wearing seatbelts. This effort has involved collaboration among the Buckeye Police, Banner Health, Buckeye Fire and Medical Rescue, and the Arizona Fire and Medical Authority.
Importantly, SRO Miklus's work is not limited purely to emergency response and educational programs. He is also devoted to nurturing relationships with students, aiming to guide them towards personal growth and success. He is reportedly invested in researching juvenile justice programs that could aid troubled youth in taking steps necessary to positively alter their life trajectories.
SRO Miklus has 18 years of experience in law enforcement and has held various roles within the Buckeye Police Department, including patrol officer, detective, field training officer, driving instructor, and drone unit member. He started his career in Ohio before relocating to Arizona.
