With nearly 30 years of service, he received the 2024 Charlotte Fire Officer of the Year award. Bright started his career on November 29, 1995, and has become one of the department's most skilled officers. His knowledge in technical rescue operations has been crucial to the team's success, according to the City of Charlotte.
Firefighter Kevin Murphy, speaking to Bright's leadership shared with City of Charlotte, said, "Captain Bright has spent his entire career helping and supporting not only the residents of Charlotte but countless other communities and fire departments." Trained in a variety of technical rescue operations like rope rescue, vehicle extrication, and more, Bright has shared his wisdom generously, fostering excellence throughout his team. It is reported that Captain Bright often encourages ongoing learning, saying, "Every day you learn something new, and you should take that opportunity to grow."
The trust that Captain Bright has earned from his crew is essential for their work. As Murphy mentioned to the City of Charlotte, his team knows they can rely on him in any situation, which Bill Mitchell, another firefighter from Bright's crew, also confirmed by stating, "There is not an officer more deserving." Bright's calm demeanor in crises strengthens this trust, making him a respected leader in the department.
Fire Chief Reginald Johnson praised Bright, stating, "and his unwavering service to the people of Charlotte make him the perfect choice for Fire Officer of the Year."
