Tragedy struck Deer Park when a chemical release at PEMEX's industrial plant left at least two people dead and 35 others requiring treatment, as reported by Click2Houston. The incident occurred on Thursday, and emergency responses included a shutdown of Highway 225 and shelter-in-place orders for the city's residents.
The leaked chemical, identified as hydrogen sulfide, is a highly toxic and flammable gas. It poses a significant risk even at low concentrations, causing symptoms ranging from headaches or eye irritation to severe outcomes such as unconsciousness and death. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez spoke to the urgency of the situation, saying, "We don’t know if there could be more, we just haven’t been able to actually make entry into the unit itself because, again, its dynamic and we want to make sure we render the area safe," according to Click2Houston.
As the community grappled with the odor of rotten eggs, a telltale sign of hydrogen sulfide's presence, air quality monitoring became paramount. Mayor Jerry Mouton Jr. assured the public that all data pointed to no immediate danger within the community. In response to the incident, PEMEX released a statement emphasizing that the situation was contained and isolated. "Members of our Emergency Response Team, Channel Industrial Mutual Aid (CIMA) and Harris County Emergency Management personnel and other government agencies are on site and responding to the situation," PEMEX stated, as reported by ABC13.
The shelter-in-place orders were eventually lifted after Harris County Pollution Control completed air quality assessments, revealing no hazardous chemicals in the vicinity, ensuring residents' safety. Likewise, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo expressed her concern, sharing, "My heart goes out to their families and loved ones," in a statement obtained by ABC13. The PEMEX facility, a feature of the local industrial landscape since its acquisition from Shell in 2022, now faces scrutiny as the community awaits further updates and the aftermath of this catastrophic event.
