A recent police-involved shooting on the 300 block of W. Division has sparked an investigation by Chicago authorities. According to a statement released by the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred on Sunday, October 13th, when officers from the 18th District engaged in a traffic stop pertaining to a person with a gun call at around 6:50 p.m.

During the stop, the vehicle's occupants defied officers' verbal commands and attempted to escape, ultimately hitting a police car. The Police Department's statement detailed that one (1) officer discharged their weapon towards the fleeing vehicle. After a brief pursuit, the said vehicle was found abandoned in the 100 block of W. North Ave., leading to the apprehension of a person of interest. Fortunately, none of the officers were injured during this encounter; however, one (1) officer was taken to an area hospital for observation.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has taken the lead on the investigation into the officers' use of force, with cooperation from the local law enforcement agency. "The comprehensive use of force investigation" by COPA was noted in the department's preliminary report as currently ongoing. This particular incident has prompted the standard administrative reassignment of the officer(s) involved in the shooting, a practice that will last at least a minimum period of 30 days as part of the procedural aftermath.

As all further inquiries have been directed to the COPA, who can be reached at (312) 746-3609.
