Residents across multiple communities on Cleveland's East side have been advised to boil their drinking water following a significant water main break. The rupture, which occurred Monday evening near Van Aken Boulevard and Ashby Road in Shaker Heights, has caused potential contamination of the water supply with illness-causing organisms, as reported by Cleveland19. The boil advisory impacts parts of Lyndhurst, South Euclid, University Heights, Shaker Heights, Highland Hills, Warrensville Heights, North Randall, and portions of the East side of Cleveland.
Travel obstruction has accompanied the water woes, with Van Aken Boulevard closed in both directions from Onaway Road to South Woodland Road and Southington Road shut down from Van Aken Boulevard to the Cleveland border in the Ludlow neighborhood. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transportation Authority has responded by replacing Blue Line trains with 67R shuttles between Shaker Square and Warrensville-Van Aken stations, according to News 5 Cleveland. The advisory is expected to remain in effect tomorrow.
Efforts to repair the damaged 30-inch water main are underway. A Cleveland Division of Water spokesperson warned that "organisms that cause illness in people may have entered the water supply," urging residents in the affected areas to boil their water as a precaution, Cleveland19 noted. Residents are advised not to drink the water without flushing it and to boil it first.
