An incident late last Tuesday at a Colorado Springs residence ended in the death of a suicidal man after an encounter with local police officers. According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to calls about a disturbance involving an adult male inside a residence on the 5100 block of Prairie Grass Lane.
The call, which came in close to midnight, reported that a man was cutting himself with a knife following a confrontation with his roommates. When officers arrived on the scene, the individual, still armed, allegedly moved toward them aggressively, prompting one officer to discharge their weapon. No other community members or officers were injured during the altercation, the statement read.
Following the shooting, officers attended to the wounded man until paramedics from American Medical Response arrived and transported him to a local area hospital. Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries. His identity has yet to be released, pending notification from the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
In line with department policy, three CSPD officers connected to the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has taken the reins as the primary investigative body for the case, a role designated by Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301. Updates on the ongoing investigation will be issued by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Public Information Office, which will likely shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
