The Indianapolis Colts have decided to sit down young quarterback Anthony Richardson in favor of veteran Joe Flacco. ESPN's senior NFL insider Adam Schefter first reported the change on Tuesday, and sources have confirmed the strategic shift aimed at salvaging the Colts' postseason aspirations this year. According to FOX59, Richardson's uneven performance, including a completion rate of only 44.4% and a 57.2 passer rating, spurred the team's management to act decisively.
With their playoff chances still alive, the Colts are seemingly opting to rely on Flacco's experience to guide them through the remainder of the season. Flacco, 39, brings a steadier hand to the offense than the 22-year-old Richardson, who has managed to win only half of his games since joining the NFL. In contrast, Flacco boasts a more reliable 65.7% completion rate, throwing for seven touchdowns with only one interception this season, according to stats cited by WTHR.
The Colts' head coach, Shane Steichen, expressed on Monday the urgency of the situation. "Right now, obviously, sitting at .500, we’re right in the thick of this thing," Steichen conveyed in a statement obtained by IndyStar. The franchise looks to pivot away from its development project with Richardson, who despite showcasing potential, has struggled to find consistency.
The Colts (4-4) will play the Minnesota Vikings (5-2) on Sunday Night Football, airing on WTHR Channel 13. The NFL moved this game to primetime due to increased interest and high stakes, as the Colts aim to stay in the playoff hunt. With Flacco as the starting quarterback, the team is looking to improve and make a serious playoff push. Their upcoming schedule includes several teams in contention for the postseason.
