On Tuesday, Columbus, Georgia will witness the naming of a local interchange in honor of a man who left a mark on its political landscape. Sen. Randy Robertson (R–Cataula), the Senate Majority Whip, is to attend the ceremony that will dedicate the interchange of Interstate 185 and US-27-Alternate/Manchester Expressway as the Honorable Richard H. Smith Memorial Interchange. The late Richard Smith, who achieved distinction as both a city councilor and State Representative, is recognised for his contributions to public life in Columbus.

Smith's journey began in Wrightsville, Georgia in 1945, and through years of dedicated service, he climbed the ranks to eventually take pivotal roles within the Columbus Consolidated Government and the Georgia House of Representatives. He was particularly influential as Chairman of the House Insurance Committee and was noted for his leadership as Chair of the House Rules Committee in 2020. His legislative efforts and community engagement significantly shaped the Columbus area.

Speaking on the legacy of Richard Smith, Sen. Robertson shared, "To many throughout our state, Richard was a man to be respected and a legislative force. To me, Richard was also a close friend that I loved. Richard was both at my wedding and present through numerous moments of my life. I’m grateful that we are designating this interchange in Richard’s name. He’s eternally impacted Columbus for the better, just as he has eternally impacted me." These words, reported by Senate Press, echo the sentiment held by many who respected Smith's work and cherished his companionship.

The memorial dedication is set at 10:00 a.m. on the campus of Columbus State University, specifically at the Cunningham Center. Local residents and state officials alike are expected to gather in recognition of the Honorable Richard H. Smith.
