To maintain the structural integrity and visual appeal of neighborhoods, the City of Dearborn has rolled out an initiative focused on providing free assistance to homeowners needing porch and front step repairs or replacements. The Front Porch & Step Rehabilitation Program, launched on Monday, is designed to help maintain community standards and safety. Eligible residents can begin to submit applications online through the City of Dearborn.

Funded in part by federal dollars, the program will prioritize repairs based on the order of application and the severity of the damage, with an evaluation process conducted by the City's Economic Development Department. Starting next Monday, an onsite evaluation will take place to establish if the homes meet the necessary criteria. Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud emphasized the importance of front porches in the community, saying, as per the City of Dearborn, "A safe and strong porch is a place where we sit and take in the sights and sounds of our neighborhood and engage in conversations."

There are specific requirements to qualify for the program. Homeowners must occupy their single-family residence in Dearborn and hold a valid Certificate of Occupancy, living in the home for at least one year – or five years if they lack the Certificate. Additionally, they should be current on property tax, utilities, water bills, and insurance. Considering special needs, the program will also assess ADA compliance for each home on a case-by-case basis. Despite being open for a short window until the end of October 2024, the initiative is expected to significantly benefit the community fabric.
