After decades of uncertainty, a woman whose body was found in Lake Pontchartrain in 1986 has been positively identified. As reported by WGNO, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office revealed the victim to be Pamela Lee Hupp, a 28-year-old woman who was pregnant with her second child at the time of her death. This breakthrough is the culmination of a 38-year-old unsolved case that had long left local authorities searching for answers.
Investigators had remained dogged in their pursuit to provide closure to a case that seemed to be cold. Utilizing advanced DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy, the efforts were supported by a partnership with Othram, a Texas-based laboratory. As detailed by DNASolves.com, forensic evidence was submitted to Othram in 2022, which led to the creation of a DNA profile using Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing®. This groundbreaking technology and subsequent genetic genealogy search brought forward new investigative leads and paved way for the eventual identification of Hupp.
The initiative to solve this longstanding mystery was bolstered by funding from NamUs—a national clearinghouse committed to resolving missing and unidentified persons cases. The organization, under the auspices of the National Institute of Justice and managed through a contract with Research Triangle Institute International, provided the necessary financial support for this sophisticated DNA analysis.
As confirmed by FOX8Live, the case is very much active, with law enforcement continuing its quest to identify and apprehend the person or persons responsible for her death. "I want to thank the many investigators over the years who worked on this case," Sheriff Randy Smith told FOX8Live. "Our detectives will not stop working until they have identified and arrested the person(s) responsible for Ms. Hupp’s death."
Now, with Hupp's identity established, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is appealing to the public for any information that might further illuminate the circumstances surrounding her untimely demise.
