A spate of robberies targeting package delivery drivers across Chicago's 5th, 6th, and 22nd Districts has put local law enforcement and residents on high alert. According to a business alert issued by the Chicago Police Department, multiple incidents occurred where offenders approached drivers and forcibly demanded packages. The crimes took place across different city blocks, with the first reported incident happening on the 9300 block of South Hamilton Ave.
Similar incidents unfolded shortly thereafter, with the 8600 block of South Indiana Ave and the 11800 block of South Hale Ave seeing such crimes on the same day, wrapping the district in an aura of anxiety and concern. Authorities reported force was used by the offenders, unnerving those who make their livelihood delivering packages to the city's residents. With robberies extending to the 500 block of West 122nd St and the 11500 block of South May St, the geographical spread of these crimes suggested a pattern—crafty as it was cruel.
Police have identified two vehicles possibly connected to these crimes: a grey SUV, believed to be a Jeep Cherokee, involved in the September incidents, and a white Jeep Laredo linked to the October 1 robbery. In at least one instance, a motorized scooter was used by the assailant, adding a diverse and unexpected element to their means of escape. A sense of urgency has been invigorated in the local communities, where the idea of serene streets now feels distant and foregone.
The Chicago Police Department urges delivery drivers and residents to maintain vigilance and proactively report any suspicious activities. By remembering unique physical characteristics, victims and witnesses could provide valuable information leading to the apprehension of these criminals. The authority stressed that nobody should pursue fleeing assailants, instead advising them to dial 9-1-1 and provide the information to the police, waiting on the scene when feasible, underpinning their commitment to public safety.
