An incident occurred off the coast of Rockport, Massachusetts, last Saturday morning, when a 50-year-old man went diving and later died following an unknown event in the water. The Essex County District Attorney's Office confirmed the incident, though the man's identity has not yet been released, as they are awaiting the notification of his family, NBC Boston reported.
The Town of Rockport's public safety dispatch received a 911 call at around 11:30 a.m. about a diver in distress near Front Beach, with the call originating from the victim's diving partner, as Rockport Town Administrator Mitchell Vieira said according to the Boston Globe. Responders from the Rockport Police and the harbormaster's office found the diver unresponsive. Despite efforts to revive him, the diver was pronounced dead at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester.
This is not the first diving-related fatality in the area, which has seen its share of similar inicdents. In the previous year, two divers were found dead in an apparent drowning incident in the same location. They were identified as 75-year-old Alan de Oliveira Leao, of Pepperell, Mass., and 78-year-old Richard Brady of Hampton, New Hampshire, as per NBC Boston.
As officials have not released further details about the cause of the latest incident, an investigation is currently being conducted by state police detectives assigned to the district attorney's office.
