Commuters in Tucson have a reason to celebrate as new westbound lanes on Interstate 10 opened on Tuesday between Ruthrauff and Orange Grove roads, as reported by the Arizona Department of Transportation. This key development marks the near completion of the main lane reconstruction between Ina and Ruthrauff roads, as part of a larger initiative to enhance traffic safety and flow. Drivers, no longer relegated to navigating the frontage road detours, are now utilizing these newly built thoroughfares.
The ongoing project, with its hefty $171 million price tag, encompasses a series of improvements aiming to modernize the interstate and its web of interchanges and bridges; this Tuesday's opening is just the latest in a series of phases planned out to persist another year, as the upgrade marches steadily toward its late 2025 finish line.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation's update, the current focus shifts to the revamp of the Orange Grove Road interchange, which is anticipated to be reopened in the coming months. Furthermore, the project’s grand finale hinges on the unveiling of a new Sunset Road interchange that promises to usher in improved access to River Road, with a bridge soaring over the Union Pacific railroad tracks and another spanning the Rillito River.
Throughout the remainder of the project, ADOT is committed to maintaining accessible routes for the local businesses that dot the surrounding landscape. For detailed insights and the latest news on the I-10 widening project, interested individuals can visit the designated ADOT webpage.
