Reconstruction efforts continue in the western Carolinas with Duke Energy leading the way, particularly in the wake of the intense aftermath of Hurricane Helene. In a recent release from Duke Energy they highlighted the progress made in restoring power to upstate South Carolina and much of western North Carolina but acknowledged that the path to full restoration for all residents remains long and challenging.
Despite having restored power to over 2.6 million customers in both states, about 6,500 in South Carolina and 83,800 in North Carolina are still in the dark due to the wrath of Helene, which necessitates a "targeted approach" for further operations, said Jason Hollifield, Duke Energy’s storm director for the Carolinas. The utility company is working closely with local, state, and federal agencies to efficiently and effectively address the needs for power grid reconstruction in these mountainous regions where the storm hit hardest, leaving some infrastructure beyond repair and others in places difficult to reach, as per the press release from Duke Energy.
Hollifield remarked on the unprecedented scale of Helene's devastation and expressed gratitude for the support shown to the workforce who have been relentless in their efforts to restore services. The energy company maintains ongoing dialogue with impacted communities, ensuring updates through various channels including email, text, and calls as restoration efforts continue.
For a concentrated operational push, Duke Energy has centralized its pivotal task force within a western North Carolina facility, pooling together the expertise including engineers and project managers to provide sustained strategic decision-making, Jason Hollifield elaborated. This decision enables direct collaboration with government entities and streamlines the restoration process during this critical period, as confirmed in their official statement.
In the wake of natural disasters, Duke Energy also took the opportunity to advise customers on the rise in scams, cautioning against sharing personal information and urging vigilance against fraud. The company's dedicated page on Helene's recovery efforts offers not just status updates but resources to help guard against scammers.
