The City of Duluth has reportedly completed a significant step in its ongoing efforts to address water quality concerns, specifically related to lead in drinking water. After an extensive review process, the city has finalized and submitted its service line materials inventory to the Minnesota Department of Health, detailing the composition of the pipes that deliver water to residents. According to a social media post by the City of Duluth, MN Government, the inventory is now available for public access.
Residents can determine the materials used in their own service lines by utilizing the Lead Inventory Tracking Tool (LITT), an online resource developed to deliver this crucial information in a readily accessible format. In the inventory findings, as of August 8, 2024, Duluth's records indicate a total of 6,856 lead service lines, 320 galvanized lines that require replacement, and a worrying figure of 5,542 lines of unknown material. Moreover, the city has 18,443 non-lead lines, hinting at a vast disparity in the quality of infrastructure that lies beneath the cityscape.
