El Paso residents might want to hold on to their hats as a backdoor cold front is set to sweep through the area, potentially disrupting the otherwise mild autumn conditions. According to the National Weather Service, increased winds are expected to hit the region starting around 9 PM in the northern Tularosa Basin. This change can bring sustained winds clocking in at 25 to 35 mph from the east-northeast with even higher gusts up to 50 mph, particularly along west mountain slopes. The wind advisory-like conditions are largely anticipated to impact the Sacramento and Hueco Mountains.
The shift in weather, described by NWS as a significant increase behind the front, will likely make itself felt for a few hours overnight and into Wednesday morning. Residents should prepare to possibly experience wind gusts strong enough to rattle windows and shake trees, especially those closer to the affected mountainous areas. These breezes are set to continue throughout the day, although gusts should decrease to around 30 mph. For those living further north and west of the front's starting point, you can still expect to catch some breezy conditions, though they're not predicted to be quite as intense.
As for the temperature, El Paso is looking at a mostly cloudy day with the mercury hovering at a comfortable 64°F (18°C) in the morning, slowly climbing to a high of 77 later in the day. Humidity sits at an easy 30%, with a barometric pressure of 30.26 in (1018.3 mb) and visibility remaining clear at 10 miles, as of the last update. The forecast, however, does indicate a twist in the tale with a slightly windier east wind at 18 to 28 mph and gusts potentially reaching 39 mph.
Tonight, the possibility of showers looms with a modest 20 percent chance for precipitation. These showers are expected to appear intermittently before and after the 3 AM mark. The cloudy skies may persist into the following day, with an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially after 3 PM on Thursday. The wind is set to shift and could, once again, gain strength gusting as high as 24 mph. For those planning ahead, the weekend promises a return to mostly sunny skies with temperatures projected to be in the high 70s to low 80s, and winds calming down substantially.
