Last night, with Halloween just around the corner, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Northwest Patrol Station opened its doors, or rather its trunks, for a festive "Trunk or Treat" event. Families gathered at Dr. Applegate Park, situated at 436 East Vinton Road and got into the spirit as sheriffs swapped out patrolling for distributing sweets from the backs of their decorated vehicles. The event, which ran from 5 PM to 7 PM, was nothing less than a community-building exercise, allowing officers to engage with residents in a setting far removed from their day-to-day duties.
Now in its second year, the success of "Trunk or Treat" speaks to a yearning for safe, communal activities where the specter of care can be momentarily banished, all the while, kids gleefully flit from car to car, gathering treats amidst the Texas dusk. Undeterred by the occasional howl of fright festivity, the sheriffs took on their role with a zealous enthusiasm. According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the goal was to provide a safe environment for children to enjoy the festivities.
The park on East Vinton Road was transformed from its daytime tranquility into a playground of imagination and treat-seeking. Officers' vehicles, adorned with all manner of Halloween decor from the comic to the slightly macabre, served as both a trick and a treat for the community's children. In painted faces and superhero capes, kids approached with both caution and excitement to see what surprises the officers had in store in the depths of their trunks.
