El Paso police's Special Traffic Investigations unit is diligently working to piece together the circumstances behind the city's 54th traffic fatality of the year. In an incident that unfolded early Sunday morning, it is reported that a vehicle operated by one Espinosa was traveling south along the 6400 block of South Desert before striking an unidentified object in the roadway. According to the City of El Paso, Espinosa initially fled the scene but subsequently returned to cooperate with law enforcement officials.
The ongoing investigation has since clarified that the object struck by Espinosa's vehicle was, in fact, a pedestrian who, at the time, was present in the roadway. The collision resulted in fatal injuries, with the victim pronounced dead at the scene. The presence of a pedestrian on the road has been acknowledged by authorities as a significant element of the accident. This tragedy marks the city's 54th traffic-related death this year, which tentatively stands to slowly fall behind last year's count of 62 at the same juncture.
As the investigation continues, details surrounding the incident remain limited. The identification of the deceased has not been made public as authorities are likely working to notify the next of kin. The El Paso Police Department has not yet indicated whether charges will be filed against Espinosa or released any further information regarding the potential cause of the pedestrian's presence on the roadway.
