In a tragic turn of events, the city of El Paso recorded its 55th traffic fatality of the year following a high-speed collision that resulted in the death of one Ruben Acosta. According to the City of El Paso, the incident occurred at the intersection of Gateway North and 4500 Sun Valley, marking a dismal milestone in the city's traffic-related fatalities.
The preliminary investigation indicated that Kevin Anthony Meacham was driving a 2017 Titan at an excessive speed while exiting US 54 at Sun Valley and as he continued traveling northbound on the 10300 block of Gateway North before approaching Sun Valley, he appeared to have attempted to make a right turn at the intersection but due to his speed, he was unable to maintain control the vehicle continued forward striking Ruben Acosta who was stationary in a Chevrolet Cruze at the westbound lanes of the 4500 block of Sun Valley. Acosta sustained serious injuries from the collision and later died in the hospital as a consequence, Meacham has been arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter, with his bond set at $155,000 by Judge Nunez, a high price to pay for a night of reckless abandon.
Speed and alcohol were cited as contributing factors to the devastating crash, these are not rare assailants in the annals of roadway tragedies, but their presence provides cold comfort to those mourning the loss of life. This latest fatality brings the year's count to 55, which is a slight decrease from the 62 fatalities recorded around the same time in 2023, yet each number bears a weight of grief and loss that statistics can only coldly enumerate.
