Four Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) employees have been fired in connection with an ongoing inquiry into suspected illegal activities at Boston's Cabot Yard and Maintenance Facility. The investigation includes claims of resources being used for personal endeavors during work hours, as Boston25 News reported. These activities reportedly involved MBTA workers doing repairs or other work on their personal vehicles while on the clock for the transit authority.
Phillip Eng, the MBTA General Manager, confirmed the terminations, denouncing the actions that contradict the agency's principles of integrity, accountability, and transparency. "We are committed to upholding our core values of integrity, accountability, and transparency in every aspect of our operations at the MBTA," Eng said, in a statement reflected in the MBTA's response to the incident, as reported by Boston25 News. Furthermore, the inquiry has led to seven additional MBTA workers being placed on leave, with one notably observed, but not directly participating in the frowned-upon activities.
The transit facility in question is mainly for storing and maintaining Red Line vehicles and buses, and it serves as the base for Red Line track workers and inspectors. Details about the alleged misuse of resources by the involved employees have not been disclosed, as authorities have not provided specific information about the infractions, as detailed by NBC Boston.
In his statement, Eng not only affirmed the immediate dismissals but also expressed a commitment to address these issues firmly within the workforce. "These are the types of actions that we don’t condone," Eng told NBC Boston, asserting his role in ensuring such behaviors are eradicated. The MBTA intends to reinforce its surveillance of facilities with additional site visits to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
The MBTA asserts that this incident of employee misconduct has not affected and will not affect the progress of its services to the public. According to Eng, the MBTA takes a strong stance against such violations and will implement necessary disciplinary measures based on the investigation's findings to ensure accountability and maintain ethical conduct within the agency.
