Starting tomorrow, San Francisco Bay Area residents and visitors will have even more reason to leave their cars at home on Fridays. The San Francisco Bay Ferry has kicked off a promotion, making all rides on the Richmond route entirely free every Friday until the end of 2024. San Francisco Bay Ferry announced the initiative much to the delight of commuters and leisure travelers alike.

"SF Bay Ferry is the highest rated transit service in the country, and we know it usually only takes one trip to turn someone into a loyal ferry rider," Seamus Murphy, Executive Director of SF Bay Ferry, explained in the announcement, as per San Francisco Bay Ferry. This "Richmond Free Ferry Friday" aims to convert occasional passengers into regulars by letting them experience the service without a fare. The ferry offers 26 weekday trips between Richmond and the San Francisco Ferry Building, each trip on usual days costing $4.70 or $2.30 for discounted fares.

Children under the age of five are always entitled to ride free, and now, with the new promotion, all age groups can enjoy a cost-free voyage across the bay—at least on Fridays. Given that no reservations are required for the 35-minute trip, it paves the way for spontaneous travel and encourages public transportation over individual vehicles.

The Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) is backing the program, which funds these free trips as part of its efforts to encourage greener travel alternatives. In a nod to the relationship between transport and the health of a metropolis, Tim Haile, Executive Director of CCTA, told San Francisco Bay Ferry, "Initiatives like this support the economic vitality of the entire Bay Area by reducing congestion, improving mobility, and fostering greater regional connectivity – and of course, there's just something special about seeing the Bay from the deck of a ferry."
