A quiet night in Downtown Memphis was disrupted by a WastePro garbage truck that wreaked havoc on Main Street this morning. The Memphis Police Department reports that the truck was caught on video careening into powerlines, causing two poles to snap in half, leaving the area littered with debris. FOX13 Memphis obtained footage showcasing the extent of the damage inflicted upon South Main Street and Butler Avenue.
The occurrence was first responded to by officers around 1 a.m., with the scene featuring trash debris, powerlines, poles, and glass scattered across the ground. A bystander told the police that she was in her apartment when she heard "a loud boom," a sound she later identified as trolley lines being yanked out of their place, as she stated, per Action News 5 report. Despite the chaos, the garbage truck did not remain at the scene, instead it continued after the destruction it had caused.
Throughout the day, crews were seen addressing the aftermath of the incident, an obvious testament to the extensive nature of the damage. There have been no reported injuries from the ordeal, and cleanup efforts were promptly underway to restore some sense of order on the street, as debris remained present as late as 8 a.m.
