The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting at the College Park MARTA station which resulted in the death of a man, as reported by the GBI's press release. The incident took place on the evening of October 6th, 2024, and saw no injuries among law enforcement personnel.
According to preliminary information released by the GBI, the sequence of events began when a man was observed threatening another individual with a firearm at the transit station. In response, an officer with the Marta Police Department approached the suspect. The suspect, reacting to the officer's commands, turned and made a motion in the direction where a gun later was found nearby the man.
The situation escalated quickly when the officer discharged their weapon, striking the man, who was then transported to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, the individual was pronounced dead. The GBI has announced that the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office will undertake an autopsy to ascertain precise details surrounding the man's death.
The GBI's ongoing investigation will continue independent of the Marta Police Department, ultimately concluding with the findings being turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office. This protocol is a standard procedure giving a review of the case to determine the next legal steps. The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending results from the autopsy.
As the community grapples with the events that have unfolded, there remains a wait for more details to emerge. The public looks towards the GBI for their thorough investigation that will shed light on the circumstances leading to this tragic loss of life.
