The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has initiated an inquiry into a recent officer-involved shooting at the Gwinnett County Jail in Lawrenceville. According to an official press release, the incident unfolded on the afternoon last Monday when Emmanuel Patrick Bearden, a 44-year-old man from Peachtree Corners, entered the facility wearing body armor and accompanied by his young daughter. During security screening, the situation escalated after deputies engaged Bearden to ascertain his intent.
Reported by the GBI, the confrontation turned violent when Bearden, carrying his daughter, walked back to his car to retrieve several firearms. The deputies on the scene issued verbal commands, which Bearden allegedly ignored, and subsequently fired shots at law enforcement officers. In response, they returned fire, critically injuring Bearden, who is currently in stable condition. None of the deputies involved in the incident reported injuries.
Bearden's daughter fortunately did not sustain any harm during the chaotic shooting and later was safely returned to her family. As per the GBI's preliminary findings, Bearden is now facing charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, with the likelihood of additional charges as the investigation progresses. Deputies immediately provided medical assistance prior to Bearden's transport to the hospital for treatment.
The independent investigation conducted by the GBI will continue, delving into the details of the violent exchange that took place at the county jail. Upon completion, the investigative files are slated to be handed over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for a thorough review, as is routine in these kinds of officer-involved shootings.
