On Monday morning, Glendale became a crime scene after a man was fatally shot. The incident happened just before 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. The victim, 49-year-old Dwight Steele, was shot and, despite efforts to save him, died from his injuries.
According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Glendale Police responded quickly to the scene amid numerous ShotSpotter activations and are working to piece together the events leading to Steele’s death. Officers have not yet identified specific suspects but believe multiple individuals may be involved. "It’s really important for people to come forward," said Jose Santiago with Glendale Police. "This one is difficult because we don’t have a lot of information about the suspect. We don’t know how many people we are dealing with, but we think there’s at least more than one suspect," explained Jose Santiago of the Glendale Police.
Reports from ABC 15 indicate that the disturbance was intense, with witnesses reporting multiple gunshots and people fleeing the area.
The local community, apparently used to the sound and the fury of violent episodes, expressed grief and resignation. "My mom is really elderly, and I have a 14-year-old daughter, and it’s bad for them," a local resident, known simply as ‘Kathy,’ told FOX 10 Phoenix. "We want to move, but it’s just hard."
The police department has requested the public's assistance in providing any relevant information. Evidence from the scene indicates a violent confrontation, with over thirty rounds fired. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS for English speakers or Testigo Silencioso at 480-TESTIGO for Spanish speakers to help bring justice for Steele and his family.
