Grass Valley residents Tyler Smith Cummings and Thomas Antoine Vieira were arrested following a specialized operation by the Nevada County Sheriff's Office. The two men were apprehended on Thursday last week after an investigation began in response to a male victim reporting serious facial injuries inflicted by the suspects one month earlier. According to a post on the Nevada County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, Cummings, 25, was charged with battery causing serious bodily injury, while Vieira, 55, faces the same charge as well as a charge of mayhem.
The victim initially delayed reporting the assault, which occurred at the Cherry Creek residence, due to fear of retribution. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office announced that the investigation prompted them to carry out the arrests with the help of specialized teams because of the suspects' known hostility toward law enforcement and their criminal backgrounds. The Sheriff's Office used various tactics, including drones, to safely clear the residence before entering, ensuring the arrests were made effectively and without incident.
The operation was a collaborative effort involving the NCSO's Major Crimes Unit, the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail, Critical Incident Negotiation Teams, and Patrol teams to apprehend the suspects. The office also enlisted support from Nevada County Sheriff's Search & Rescue, deploying two skilled 911 dispatchers for private communications during the operation and utilizing drone technology from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
Cummings and Vieira are now in custody at Wayne Brown Correctional Facility as investigations continue. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information from the public to advance their case. They encourage anyone with knowledge of Cummings and Vieira's actions to come forward to help clarify the events leading to the assault. Community members with relevant information are urged to contact NCSO’s Major Crimes Unit at (530) 265-1471 to assist with the investigation.
