The Gresham Fire Department has announced a press conference scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3, to share Firefighter Spencer Tejedas's journey of recovery after sustaining severe injuries earlier this year. The conference was held at 1 pm at Station 31, located at 1927 Southeast 174th Avenue, Portland, where Tejedas alongside his wife Melea and fellow firefighter Jack Pilarski, who was also injured in the same incident, spoke about their experiences.

Tejedas, who suffered serious burns over 45% of his body during a firefighting response last May, was recently released from rehabilitation. Fire Chief Scott Lewis expressed his delight in a statement to the press, as per the City of Gresham, "We are thrilled for the progress Spencer has made and that he is finally able to be back home with his family." Tejedas's recovery included multiple surgeries and the amputation of most of his fingers, making the rehabilitation process particularly challenging.

The press event aims to highlight not only Tejedas's return home but also the ongoing journey he faces as his rehabilitation continues. The Gresham firefighter has been under care for the past 18 weeks, first at the Oregon Burn Center and then at a rehabilitation center, demonstrating the extensive nature of treatment required for such severe injuries.

The incident that led to Tejedas's and Pilarski's injuries occurred on May 30, when they, alongside other firefighters from the Gresham Fire Department and Portland Fire and Rescue, responded to a duplex fire. The response was met with rapidly changing conditions, resulting in injuries to three firefighters. While two were treated and released, Tejedas sustained far more critical injuries which resulted in a much longer and difficult road to recovery. His resilience, and the support of his medical team and family, however, allowed him to reach this point where he can now share his story with the public.
