Late Wednesday night, a segment of the Bishop Ford Freeway on Chicago's South Side became the scene of gunfire, which prompted a shutdown lasting several hours. According to ABC7 Chicago, state police reported that around 11:40 p.m., a suspect opened fire at another vehicle while driving on Interstate 94, near 115th Street. The intended victim, who later reported the incident at a Chicago police station, was unharmed.
Authorities first indicated that the person was the casualty of a shooting, only to later clarify that no injuries occurred. The gunman managed to flee the scene posthaste. Subsequently, northbound I-94 was closed from 130th to 111th streets shortly after midnight for investigative purposes. The Chicago Sun-Times further provided that state troopers initially responded to the incident aiding the Chicago Police Department, before the lanes were finally reopened at about 3:50 a.m.
At present, details surrounding the circumstances which led to the shooting remain unclear. The authorities have not released additional information about the victim, refusing to specify age or gender, nor have they given insights into the sequence of events that unfolded prior to the incident. The shooter's identity remains unknown as well, as state police continue their search for the perpetrator.
The incident briefly transformed a section of the freeway into a crime scene, disrupting the flow of nighttime traffic until the early hours of Thursday. While the Department has not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting, they are asking anyone with information to come forward. The investigation remains ongoing.
