A former school resource officer from Habersham County has been indicted on charges including Violation of Oath of Office by a Public Officer and False Statements. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) apprehended David Matthew Jackels, aged 47, after thoroughly examining allegations concerning the officer's conduct with students.
According to the GBI's official press release, the inquiry into Jackels, a Cornelia, Georgia resident, stemmed from a request dating back to February 29. The request, made by Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell, urged the independent investigation that led to the arrest on Wednesday. Following his arrest, Jackels found himself booked into the Habersham County Detention Center.
The GBI's ongoing investigation is still gathering details and encourages those with information to step forward. Making the process accessible to the public, the GBI has provided multiple avenues for anonymous tips, including a dedicated phone line at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), a tip submission via their website, and the "See Something, Send Something" mobile application.
Once completed, the investigation's results will be turned over for prosecution to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney. In the meantime, David Matthew Jackels remains entwined in the legal process.
